What Is Shared Hosting?

Shared hosting is the most popular package on the market.

In the data center of a shared hosting provider, individual servers can host hundreds, if not thousands, of websites.

Multiple clients share each server, which means that storage and compute resources are limited.

If a user uses multiple server resources, such as RAM and storage, you may also be affected, which slows down the loading or downtime of your website.

What Is Cloud Hosting?

Cloud hosting is a high-end option focused on performance, reliability and scalability, involves connecting and virtualizing multiple servers to share storage and processing resources.

The hardware components are optimized to handle particular tasks and additional servers are ready to be filled in the event of a failure or offline.

Customers can provision or disable additional IT resources to meet the traffic demand, making the product particularly useful for growing businesses

What Is WordPress Hosting?

WordPress hosting is any sort of webhosting that is particularly optimized to run websites built by WordPress.

In managed wordpress hosting, all technical features of running WordPress is maintained by the host provider. This includes security, speed, updates, daily backups, site uptime, and scalability.

Many web hosts now offer dedicated WordPress-centric plans.

Other hosts (such as WP Engine) dedicate themselves entirely to WordPress, in order to provide the best service possible for those users.

That doesn’t indicate that you want this kind of hosting if you want to manage a WordPress website. You can technically run a WordPress site on all hosta.

What To Look For In A Good WordPress Web Host

Some of the features you will want to watch carefully when evaluating WordPress hosting services include:

The performance of the host: If you want your website to be a success online, you really need a good host. Beyond on-site optimization, the hardware and software configuration of your host will influence the loading speed of your site.

The options available:Web hosts that offer multiple plans will be able to meet the needs. In addition, you will be able to develop your site with the same host, while saving money when you're just getting started.

Backup system and backup management: A good backup management system is essential for the sustainability of your project!

Customer Support: Having a dedicated support team behind you can help relieve much of the stress you can sometimes feel when managing your site. Eventually, you will face problems that require support and you will need a team to get help when this happens.

Security: Regardless of the size of your website, security is something you will want to think about from day one. A good WP host will provide you with strong security features right from the start.

WordPress oriented: Some call themselves WP hosts because they offer easy one-click installation of the CMS. But high-quality web hosts offer them specific WordPress features that will help you get the most out of your site.

Quality/Price:Of course, you want a web host that will improve the performance of your site and enhance its security, but not if you spend much more than what your site actually pays. You'll want a balance of WP-specific features at a price you can obviously afford.

The points above may seem like a lot to consider, but choosing a WordPress web host is something you want to take seriously. When you begin your search, you will find that many of the features highlighted above are common.

Why Is The Loading Speed Of A Site So Important?

The main feature to consider when choosing a web host is the speed of loading the pages of your site. A substantial part of our test will naturally focus on this aspect.

Whether for search engines or visitors, a slow site will often have more trouble than a fast site. To put it simply, the slow loading of your website pages usually results in:

  • A lower ranking in the search engines (the SERPs)
  • Higher bounce rates
  • Fewer pages visited
  • A decrease in the conversion rate.
  • Finally, and most importantly, a slow site often means a loss of profits.

The speed of your website is therefore essential to the profitability of your business, and it starts with the right choice of WordPress hosting.

The Method Used To Find Your Web Host For WordPress

To be able to examine the performance of the hosts, we designed identical test websites on each of the plans we took at these WP hosts.

All these sites are hosted on shared servers that you find in the shared entry plans of each hosting company.

Then we obtained the following tests:

  • Ability to cope with a heavy WP blog in plugins
  • Value for money
  • Speed and quality of technical support
  • Ability to handle a good simultaneous traffic load
  • Loading speed with multiple measuring tools and from different locations

We started by creating the sites on Siteground, which we then cloned via one or the other of these migration plugins: All in one migration and Duplicator.

Some hosts forbid the use of Duplicator, sometimes even both plugins, which forced us to clone certain sites manually.

Test # 1: Loading Speed Of Heavy Sites In Images

In this test, we took the installation of Site Test 1 (heavy in image) for each web host that we spent in 2 measurement tools: Pingdom and GTMetrix.

We did the tests on the 7 places offered by GTMetrix and averaged all the results.

Often, the content of a website is cached on the hosting server and the CDN. So we repeated these tests twice to make sure the caching was ended and that we had the same basis for interpreting the effects.

Note : The test websites are actual and operational now ( reason why we hided them, sorry)

WP hosting tested

We then repeated this procedure with Pingdom using the 5 proposed locations, and compared the results to see if they matched.

Here are what the results look like (from the fastest to the slowest):

Update: we are now re-testing Kinsta and Hostinger and it seems so far , they are exceeding our expectations. We will update the list soon.

TTFB: Time To First Byte, response time of a server following a request.

These results must be taken with care.

Pingdom and GTMetrix are primarily intended to analyze the elements that form a site: the images and their size, the external links, the elements of compression to realize.

These results are to be taken with the two-sided approach when we test performance between hosts, since depending on the geographical location of a user, the lengths of optical fibers are different and will cause variations of several milliseconds per request from one host to another.

However, we can draw some general trends by cross-checking the results of these two tools, without focusing on pure speeds.

Test # 2: Loading Speed Of Heavy Sites In Plugins

A site heavy in plugins can slow down the loading time of a site, that is why we carried out a second test with sites on which we installed 22 plugins very used and no additional content.

The tests 2 are a little different because here we analyze the computing power of the host more than the speed of static image files.

We spent the sites in the same GTMetrix and Pingdom analysis tools and here are the results:

Test # 3: Loading Speed Of Heavy Sites Into Images + CloudFlare CDN

We tested the hosting by adding a content delivery network, CDN , to those who did not have a default one, namely Siteground and other...

Web hosts generally recommend activating the CloudFlare CDN which is now available for free in just about any hosting package. The objective of the CDN is to increase the loading speed of the sites.

We have cloned Test Site 1 on a new domain on which the free CloudFlare CDN has been enabled. Then we passed all test sites in question in GTMetrix and Pingdom.

Again, the hierarchy remains the same with Siteground in the lead, followed closely by Cloudways and Bluehost a little further. There is an improvement in speed on Dreamhost Server and Fastcomet.

Test # 4: Load Impact

In this test, we try to see how a host reacts when a site receives 100 simultaneous visits.

A peak of traffic is often a source of a slowdown of the site, that can give us some interesting elements as for the capacity of a host to face a large influx of visitors.

The problem with using a Load impact and sending hundreds of virtual users simultaneously is that it looks like a DDoS attack. Today, the vast majority of hosts have anti-DDoS protection that can automatically block this traffic.

We, hence, limited the sending of virtual visitors to 100, to avoid triggering this protection. This represents a rather correct amount of simultaneous traffic on shared hosting plans!

Note as we said tests were performed on live sites.Hence, the traffic was more than 100 visits.

Test # 5: Quality And Responsiveness Of Technical Support

The loading speed of a site's pages is one thing, but the speed and quality of customer support is another.

The technical support is not automated and made by robots, the responsiveness of staff can vary considerably from one day to another, depending on the number of problems to be solved.

But as before, we can still make a finding for a particular request. Should we then build great truths about this or that online support service, it's more difficult to say.

If you really want to get an overview of hosting service, the best is still to peel the hundreds of comments and user feedbacks that are easily found on the web.

But even in this case, we must be careful because those who take the trouble to write a comment are often the most dissatisfied.

In order to better test the support of different hosts, we asked two questions at 3 days apart and at different times. Each time we asked the same question to the technical teams of the the hosts in question.

The idea here is to see how long the support takes to respond and whether it can solve the problem easily.

Here are the results ( some of the feedback are taken from our clients ).

Webhosting Test (1)

ImportantThese results are of course to put into perspective because there are many parameters to take into account , knowing that we can not unfortunately go directly to test the infrastructure of web hosts! since the  important elements to consider isThe mastery of the host on its infrastructure

Conclusion:

In this wordpress hosting comparison, we hope you will know exactly which hosting company you will choose.

One thing we learned from reviewing and comparing web hosting services is that reading the terms of sale is important, especially if you are anxious to take advantage of low prices.

Many hosts have multiple levels of service, with introductory prices on starter packages and expanded offers in higher priced packages. Do not be tricked by the big fonts that boast low monthly fees!

Some web hosts charge additional fees for the tools you could use to design your website.

Other hosts require you to sign up for a 3-year hosting agreement to get this competitive monthly rate.

Sometimes, the price listed is a launch offer, and after a month or a year, you will come back at a higher price.

As long as you do not know what features you need and how fast you plan to grow, do not engage in plans on medium-to-long term advice.

I can recommend Hostinger and Clouddways as the Best Hosting For WordPress Sites, both offer Free Site Migration.
